About the S&W 5906
Smith & Wesson began introducing their 3rd generation of semiautomatic handguns in the late 1980’s. The move to the 3rd generation brought many upgrades, such as stainless steel or alloy frames, along with a new numbering system to Smith & Wesson’s semiautomatic handgun line.
5903 – Introduced in 1990, the 5903 is an alloy framed double action 9MM handgun with a 15 round magazine. It saw heavy use in law enforcement through the 1990’s.
5906 – Introduced in 1989, the 5906 is identical to the 5903 except for frame material - the 5906 uses a stainless steel frame.
3913 – Introduced in 1990, the 3913 is an alloy framed, single stack 9MM.
Chief Special 9MM – Compact, single stack variation.
