Ruger Firearms

Sturm, Ruger, & Co. Inc—or Ruger for short—represents one of America’s finest firearm brands, synonymous with quality craftsmanship and rugged reliability. Known as the “Arms Makers for Responsible Citizens,” Ruger is the third-largest US manufacturer just behind Smith & Wesson and Remington.

Top-Selling Ruger Firearms

Ruger sells over 40 different firearms with 800+ variations—including handguns, revolvers, and rifles—so there is something for everyone, law enforcement and government agencies included. The Ruger American (2015) is a popular choice, representing the company’s striker-fired / polymer frame handguns and available in full-size or compact models. The Ruger 10/22 offers consumers an affordable yet reliable .22 LR rifle with eight configurations, earning the moniker of “America’s Favorite Rifle.” The SR9 gives competitors like Glock and Smith & Wesson a run, offering a double-action-only pull in a striker-fired weapon. The Mark Series is another popular line evolving out of the company’s original standard.

Whether you have an LC9, SR 1911, Ruger American, or an LC380, you can count on XS Sights for the fastest sights in any light that accommodates these models and more. A Brief History of Ruger

Ruger’s humble beginnings date back to 1949. With $50,000 in the bank and a small production facility affectionately dubbed “the Red Barn,” partners Alexander McCormick Sturm and William B. Ruger designed an affordable semi-automatic .22-caliber pistol inspired by World War II handguns like the Japanese Nambu and the German Luger. Buyers liked the well-balanced, easy ergonomics, which produced a back order of 5,000 units less than a year later.

After Sturm unexpectedly died of viral hepatitis in November 1951, Ruger diversified the company offerings to westerns and popular single action revolvers. By 1969, the company became publicly traded. By 1970, they had sold their one millionth "Old Model" single-action revolver. It took 17 years to reach this milestone, but the "New Model" single-action revolver sold one million units in 1979—just six years after it was released.

The one-millionth Ruger Standard contains custom engravings and inlaid gold by Master Engraver Ray Viramontez, who sold it for $27,200 at auction in 1980, with proceeds going to the International Shooter Development Fund. It now resides at the NRA National Firearms Museum underneath a portrait of Bill Ruger.

After serving the company for 53 years, Bill Ruger died in 2002. His son, Bill Ruger Jr, ran the company until his passing in 2018, after 42 years of employment at his father's company. Even though there are no original founding members left today, the company remains American-owned and operated with no signs of slowing.

They launched the Ruger Custom Shop and began producing competition-grade versions of the SR1911 pistol and 10/22 rifle in 2018. Smith & Wesson shooting team captain Doug Koenig also joined the Ruger team’s 1,800 employees, creating a new SR1911 with his name on the slide. In 2020, Ruger acquired all the Marlin Firearms from Remington with plans to reintroduce the line.

Today, Ruger sells over one million guns a year and is valued at over $940 million, as the only American firearms company publicly traded on its own and not part of a parent company.
